In a September 2026 Canadian price study, roughly year-long merchandise baskets for two eyes ranged from $148 to $320 for monthly spherical lenses and from $476 to $1,264 for daily spherical lenses. Toric and multifocal prescriptions generally cost more.

Those figures are observed Canadian retail ranges, not national averages. They also show why a single “average contact lens price” is not especially useful. A fair comparison has to use the exact prescribed product, the same pack size, the same number of wear days and the complete cost of getting it to your door.

The price depends on the kind of lens

The largest cost difference comes from replacement schedule and prescription complexity. The following baskets use four 6-packs for monthly lenses, four 12-packs for biweekly lenses and eight 90-packs for daily lenses.

Lens type

Observed price per box

Two-eye supply

Estimated merchandise cost

Monthly spherical

$36.95–$79.99

12 monthly cycles

$148–$320

Biweekly spherical

$59.95–$109.99

336 days

$240–$440

Daily spherical

$59.49–$157.99

360 wear-days

$476–$1,264

Monthly toric

$49.95–$105.99

12 monthly cycles

$200–$424

Daily toric

$107.94–$266.00

360 wear-days

$864–$2,128

Monthly multifocal

$74.95–$129.99

12 monthly cycles

$300–$520

Daily multifocal

$139.95–$230.99

360 wear-days

$1,120–$1,848

The ranges come from exact matched-pack prices at competing Canadian retailers. They are merchandise prices before shipping, order fees, tax, insurance or professional care. The full methods and product-level results are available in our Canadian contact lens price study.

Monthly lenses usually cost less for full-time wear

Reusable lenses have an extra care cost, but adding that cost does not erase their full-time price advantage in the central benchmarks. We used a base care allowance of $161 per year, derived from current Canadian multipurpose-solution prices and a clearly stated 10 mL-per-care-day scenario.

Full-time category

Monthly lens merchandise

Monthly plus base care

Daily-disposable benchmark

Difference

Spherical

$224

$385

$880

$495 lower

Toric

$347

$508

$1,374

$866 lower

Multifocal

$428

$589

$1,504

$915 lower

These are category benchmarks, not quotes for a particular prescription. Contact lenses are medical devices, and products are not interchangeable simply because one costs less.

Reusable lenses cost more than the box price

To measure that hidden layer, we compared three exact care-solution twin packs across five Canadian retailers. Thirteen exact observations were accepted after excluding one mismatched product and one unresolved promotional price.

Care product

Exact pack

Observed price

Price per 100 mL

Biotrue Advanced

2 x 300 mL

$21.97–$29.49

$3.66–$4.92

OPTI-FREE PureMoist

2 x 300 mL

$24.99–$29.49

$4.17–$4.92

CLEAR CARE Plus

2 x 360 mL

$24.97–$30.49

$3.47–$4.23

At the median observed multipurpose-solution price, the model produces annual care costs of $129 at 8 mL per day, $161 at 10 mL and $193 at 12 mL. These are sensitivity scenarios, not estimates of how much every Canadian uses. Rubbing, rinsing, filling the case and following the product’s directions can change consumption.

CLEAR CARE provides a useful cross-check because its manufacturer states that one 12 oz bottle supplies approximately 30 days when used as directed. At the observed Canadian twin-pack prices, that works out to about $152 to $185 in normalized annual consumption. Buying enough whole packs to cover the first 365 days would require seven twin packs, or $175 to $213 before tax, with unused solution carrying into the next period.

Daily lenses can cost less for occasional wear

Daily disposables have a high full-time annual cost because a new pair is used every day. Occasional wear changes the arithmetic. The central daily-spherical benchmark in the study was $879.92 for 360 bilateral wear-days, or about $2.44 each day they are worn.

Daily-spherical wear frequency

Modelled annual merchandise cost

1 day per week

$127

2 days per week

$254

3 days per week

$381

5 days per week

$636

360 wear-days

$880

The modelled monthly-spherical total was $353 to $417 after adding low-to-high care scenarios. That places the crossover at approximately 144 to 171 wear-days per year, or about 2.8 to 3.3 days per week. Under these central assumptions, daily disposables can cost less below roughly three wear days per week, while monthly lenses can cost less above it.

The crossover assumes a reusable pair is open during every monthly replacement cycle. It is a budgeting tool, not a recommendation to change lens type or replacement schedule.

Other costs can change the equation

Shipping and order fees

Fixed shipping matters most on small refills. In the delivered-cost study, a low box price sometimes lost its advantage after shipping or processing charges were added. Compare the total for the quantity you will actually buy, not the price attached to one box.

Promotions and rebates

An immediate discount reduces the amount due today. A first-order code only helps an eligible new customer, a subscription requires recurring deliveries and a manufacturer rebate is only received after a successful claim. Keep the amount paid today separate from the amount that might be recovered later.

Taxes

Prescription contact lenses can be zero-rated for GST/HST when the applicable prescription or assessment-record conditions are met. Care solutions are commonly displayed with tax added. A national comparison should therefore record the tax actually shown instead of adding one assumed rate to every purchase.

Losses and prescription changes

A larger order may unlock free shipping or a better per-box price, but it also ties up more money. If your prescription changes or unopened boxes cannot be returned, part of the apparent saving can disappear.

How to tell whether your lenses are expensive

Start with the exact prescribed product and pack size. Similar names and different box counts are not fair comparisons.

Calculate a two-eye supply. A one-eye box price can make the annual cost look half as large as it really is.

Use the replacement schedule. Compare monthly cycles with monthly cycles and daily wear-days with daily wear-days.

Add reusable-lens care. Keep the assumption visible rather than hiding one universal estimate in the total.

Compare the delivered amount due today. Include shipping and mandatory fees, then show conditional rebates separately.

About this comparison

Lens prices come from the September 2026 VisionPros Canadian contact lens price study. It contains 408 accepted exact matched-pack competitor observations across three collection waves. The care-cost extension observed exact solution packs at Walmart Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart, Well.ca, Real Canadian Superstore and Jean Coutu on September 16, 2026. The retailers form a purposive sample, not a probability sample of every Canadian purchase.

Prices are in Canadian dollars and can change.
